    India: Poverty Facts

Indias population of 1 billion makes it the second largest country in the world.
One third of its population (330,000,000 people) live in absolute poverty.
1 in 9 children in India die before they reach their fifth birthday.
    45% of adults are illiterate.
86% of the population do not have access to sanitation.

30% to 40% of the population of India experiences chronic hunger every year, caused commonly by a lack of water. 45 million people in India are disabled, yet fewer than 2% of these receive the support they need to lead a relatively normal life. Urban poverty is huge in India - it is estimated 100,000 people sleep rough every night in Delhi alone (many of these children). 3.7 million people in India have Aids/HIV and the inpoverished are most at risk of infection.

Africa: Poverty, the people speak out

    Michael Lubega, Uganda:
"Poverty is the cause of most of the suffering in Africa. War, Aids, most problems are due to poverty."

    Joseph Mihaye, Ghana:
"Poverty is killing us in the villages. Please help us. Thank you."

    Josephine Asingo, Kenya:
"stop treating Africans like beggars. We have potential, give us an equal playing ground."

Please help to stop world poverty and sponsor Sam on this trek.

    Maria Photiou of ActionAid, said:
